Our First Green Chef Meal Kit Experience
Gail and I wanted to try a new meal kit service, so I chose Green Chef for this week’s experience. The box arrived via FedEx today, and I almost thought it came from Hello Fresh, because everything looks so much like a Hello Fresh box. The box, logo and artwork, inside packing, ice packs, and even the bags that the ingredients come in are all very reminiscent of Hello Fresh. I can’t help but wonder if it’s a sister-company or just a company that wants to imitate a competitor. I don’t know, and it really doesn’t matter to me, I guess. I am happy to see the bags of ingredients because I really like using the bags as a little trash container to toss the throw-away bits and pieces into while I cook. That makes for quick and easy cleanup later.
All Organic Surprise
I was surprised to see little stickers on each of the veggies that mentioned Organic produce. I didn’t realize Green Chef would be sending all organic produce so that was a nice surprise.
Quick and Easy
Prep took just a couple of minutes as most of the work was already done. I just had to slice a few radishes and chop some mint and cilantro. Very nice! The cooking process was just as simple and very fast.
Flavor, Flavor, Flavor
Oh let’s talk about the flavor. This was a bright, flavorful meal that Gail and I both loved.
The coconut rice was amazing, and I will definitely be throwing some shredded coconut into my rice more often!
The marinade for the shrimp was delicious. I don’t know what was in it yet but I’ll be trying to figure it out. The marinade came pre-mixed.
The slaw with the combination of slaw, radishes, mint, cilantro, and mango was stellar! Gail doesn’t even eat radishes but she ate the entire salad because it was just that tasty.
Premium Taste – Premium Price
We both gave this meal 5 stars but luckily I don’t rate the pricing because this meal kit company falls into the premium line of pricing. We usually choose from the mid-range meal kit companies, so this is the first time we’ve tried a company in the premium pricing level. It’s about $3 more per meal than what we are used to, so that’s definitely a consideration for future ordering.
Premium Service – Premium Choices
Here’s one of the really cool things about Green Chef – the choices! This week I chose meals from the Pescatarian Plan (fish, shellfish, and vegetarian meals), but there are plenty of other categories to choose from. You can choose from any of the categories in any given week.
2-person plan categories are:
- Omnivore
- Vegetarian
- Gluten-Free
- Paleo
- Keto
- Heart Smart
- Lean & Clean
- Mediterranean
- Pescatarian
Family style plans come in only 2 categories
- Omnivore
- Carnivore
I know some of my friends who are into Keto and Paleo eating will be happy to see those are choices.
I am looking forward to trying the other two meal kits that were in the box. If they are as good as tonight’s was, I will have a hard time resisting ordering more, even at the extra price level. Of course, I’ll let you know what we think of the next two meals, so stay tuned!
