Today’s writing prompt for Bloganuary is “What makes you laugh”?
I find lots of things funny, and some things that others laugh at just make me raise my eyebrows, like, “What are they smoking?”
You know what I don’t find funny? I don’t like slapstick and I don’t like dumb boy comedy, you know, like The Three Stooges or almost anything starring Will Ferrell. But although I do tend to laugh at the “smarter” style of comedy, that doesn’t mean it all has to be “intelligent”. I love bad dad jokes that make people groan and say “that’s so corny”!
Facebook has a never-ending supply of things that make me guffaw, from dogs that dance the cha-cha to memes that make fun of everyday situations. In fact, that may be my favorite thing of all. I like when people point out things we take for granted in our everyday lives that are actually kind of hysterical. It even has a name. It’s called “observational humor”, when people find unnoticed humor within everyday life.
George Carlin was probably the first one I ever noticed that did this.
Of course, Jerry Seinfeld did as well, although I can’t say I’m a big Seinfeld fan. He gets on my nerves.
Lately, people like Sindhu Vee has been tickling my funny bone. I love when she talks about parenting or those kinds of normal situations, but she really hits home with how absurd it can all be. Here’s a video to show what I mean.
But I don’t only find this kind of comedy funny. I also love in-your-face, “did she really go there???” comedy, like Tiffany Haddish dishes out. This video is a little long, but you really need to see it to the end, because some of the jokes are broken up throughout the video.
Of course, I find people like Betty White hilarious, and there are just a ton of sitcoms I’ve loved over the years. Here are a few I can think of:
- Will and Grace
- Murphy Brown
- The Good Place
- Big Bang Theory
- How I Met Your Mother
- Ted Lasso
So other than slapstick and stupid comedy, I’m pretty much a fan of laughing at life in general. It’s probably why I have an entire category here on the blog called General Absurdity. It’s where I share the amusing things I notice as I go about my life. I haven’t posted much there, unfortunately. I should do that more often, because pretty much every single day, I come across something that is generally absurd and funny. I’ll try to do better at sharing those things, y’all.
This post is part of the WordPress Bloganuary Challenge for 2022, where everyone participating is provided a writing prompt each day. Today’s prompt was to write about what makes me laugh.
